City Hall gadfly David Sanders exposes Winnipeg's new Civic Weasel No. 1

Winnipeg has a new Civic Weasel No. 1! St Vital councilor Brian Mayes' embarrassing performance at the last city council meeting was enough for him to leapfrog over this new council's frontrunner for the title, I'M-MARTY-MORANZ-AND-I'M-A -LAWYER!!!! Brian Mayes went ballistic over a suggestion that the former city council showed favoritism when voting in favour of an amended route for the second leg of the bus rapid transit plan in south Winnipeg. Gee, who would think that?  How about EVERYBODY IN WINNIPEG!  Why? Maybe it's because three audits of city construction projects have found BLATANT FAVORITISM IN THE AWARDING OF CONTRACTS! Nevertheless, Mayes wants people to think this time it's different.  And he demonstrated he's willing to insult, attack, belittle, and denigrate anyone who dares to disagree with him. But while Mayes was playing the right fool, he made the mistake of challenging someone a lot smarte...

It's not a hate crime if an Indian does it.

Imagine this... A passenger on a Winnipeg Transit bus captures a hate crime on video with his cell phone. Local television stations get wind of what he's got and turn the video into a news story. But... Their story is all about how tough it is being Ralph Kramden in Winnipeg.  All the racism in the video is deliberately excised. Well, you don't need to imagine. That's exactly what happened, with CBC and Global News this Friday.  T hese "professional" journalists decided to whitewash the story for general consumption.   And they would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for citizen journalist Marty Gold, of The Great Canadian Talk Show, who decided to watch the video (posted on Youtube) for himself and was floored by what he saw. He started to spread the word. The video depicts the disruption caused on a Corydon bus in downtown Winnipeg in the middle of a June afternoon by two foul-mouthed men who had been harassing a girl to the po...

Black Rod Potpourri: Ghosts, a rescue, a spanking or two, and, oh gee, a city hall boondoggle

Whither Liberals? We've been asked why we don't write anything about the Liberal Party in our provincial election coverage. Oh, c'mon. The what? There hasn't been a viable Liberal Party in Manitoba since the Swinging Sixties (that's more than FORTY YEARS AGO), and that includes the wacko election of 1988 when it became the official opposition under Sharon Carstairs with 20 MLA's, most of whom were shocked to find they had actually won their seat. One winner wanted to know if becoming an MLA meant he had to quit his job at Consumer Distributing. The Liberals haven't elected enough members to the Manitoba Legislature to rank as an official party since 1995---that's merely 16 years ago. They should run as the Ghost of the Liberal Party. In the last provincial election they got a whopping 12 percent of the popular vote. The news media continues to pretend there is a Liberal Party in Manitoba because the don't want to admit the truth. ...
